The wonderful Angela Lansbury, who in my opinion can do no wrong. The marvelous Jerry Herman score. So why didn't I like this show? It was because as it traveled to San Francisco it had to have its sets downsized to fit the California theater. This made all my dreams of sets and costumes disappear and it seemed as if the show were played on a more empty stage than should have been. Beware touring companies, though for the most part they are fine. Even so, this performance had the brilliant Lansbury in her pre-"Murder, She Wrote" days, doing what she loves to do...sing and dance and do these well. Besides, even this lackluster performance (due only to the poor sets) was better than the travesty filmed as "Mame".
